When it comes to 911s, there is no doubt that the 993 generation comes to mind when bringing up the question of which is the “best” 911. Produced between 1993 and 1998, it was a car that marked several firsts for the flagship model, while also marking the end of an era for Porsche. It was the first 911 that was available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, in comparison to the 5 forward gears seen on the 964. It was also the generation that standardized the “S” moniker, used to distinguish 911 models still to this day. More importantly, however, it was the last air-cooled Porsche, and also the last to be based on the classic 911 shape, before the introduction of the 996 in 1997.
The 993 Turbo was the model that changed the characteristics of the 911 Turbo as it was seen then. Firstly, it had an all-wheel drive drivetrain, instead of rear-wheel drive as was seen in the 930 and 964 Turbos. In addition to this, the engine was fitted with smaller twin-turbocharger units rather than a big single-turbo unit, which was done to reduce turbo lag. The result was a car that was more forgiving to drive and more up to par with modern automotive standards at the time. Upon release, the car was a hit, with journalists praising the car’s change in image to being more of a GT car that still is capable of packing a punch.

The car that is the topic of this post is a model year 1997, which was the final model year of the 993 Turbo in North America. The interesting part of this car, however, is its specification. It is finished in the rare Speed Yellow exterior with a Black leather interior. On the inside it also has some rare and desirable options, which include the hardback sport seats with Porsche crests on the headrests, the tequipment gear lever and handbrake, and white dials for the instrument cluster. As for the car’s mechanical condition, there is no information on its service history from the dealer’s website, but seeing that it has only covered 30,000km from new, it is highly likely that it is in outstanding mechanical condition.
Personally, I have to say that this is my dream spec 993 Turbo. After seeing various 993s both outside in the flesh and in pictures, I concluded that Speed Yellow is my favourite colour, and my reasoning for that is that it does a great job at showing off the lines off the 993 like no other colour(Arena Red comes a distant second). As for the asking price of this car, which is $255,000 CAD as of writing this article, it is slightly high considering that the average asking price for 993 Turbos that have seen little to moderate use is about $200K CAD. The premium on the price is likely brought by the rare colour combo and the low kilometres. That being said, one would have to be someone that would desire this car so badly in order to pay up that price, else, this price is somewhat in the territory of other nicely specced 993s. Given the difficulty of finding Speed Yellow 993s, let alone a Turbo or the other desirable models such as the C2S and C4S, I would be willing to pay that price. The question is, to drive or pamper the car.
