Porsche Temporarily Stops Production Due To COVID-19

Now a pandemic, COVID-19 has prompted nations across the globe to take further action in attempting to flatten the curve that depicts the increasing number of cases each day. Among these actions is the limitation or temporary closure of non-essential businesses, such as shopping stores, cinemas, and bars. One of the recent closures we have now heard of has been that of several car manufacturers suspending production, and Porsche is now the latest name added to that list.

From March 21st, Porsche will halt vehicle production on both its Zuffenhausen and Leipzig factories, initially for a period of 14 days. Asides from the temporary shut down of the plants, there is also a stop to business travel, opting to instead have its workers work from home. As a result, the company expects a decrease in sales and the challenge of remaining financially strong.

“With these measures, our company contributes to protect the workforce and reduce the spread of the coronavirus. The actual consequences are not yet predictable. It is therefore too early for forecasts. What is clear is that 2020 will be a very challenging year,”

Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG

With Europe now recognized as an epicenter for the virus, having over 75,000 cases as of writing, it is the right move for non-essential businesses to partially shut down for the time being, even if they are not instructed by federal authorities to do so. By now, it is evident that there is nothing more important than everyone’s wellbeing, and Porsche has taken the right step towards helping society rid itself of this tough situation.
