It has been a well-kept secret at Porsche for a long time now. With the success of the 981 Cayman GT4 came the question of whether or not the model would get the coveted RS badge. With the first GT4 coming out at the end of the 981’s lifespan, it was expected that we would not see such model until the 982. The 718 Cayman has been on sale for 4 years now, and while we did get another iteration of the GT4, there has been some teasing in the background by Porsche.

Seen recently at the Nurburgring is a 718 Cayman sporting some seriously aggressive bodywork, with cues from the GT4. Certainly standing out is the massive rear wing, never before seen in a GT-Porsche. I wanna say that the design of this wing is still a work-in-progress given its current design. That being said, it wouldn’t prevent the car from generating a good amount of down force for the corners. Another recognizable feature in this mule is the NACA ducts on the hood. These ducts are present in the 991.2 GT2 and GT3RS models to provide cool air to the brakes. With similar placing seen in this Cayman, the application of NACA ducts is likely similar.

Asides the aformentioned features, everything is standard Cayman GT4. Previously, a mule sporting what appeared to be centerlock wheels was spied testing outside The Ring. With most of the GT cars having such wheels, it should be no surprised if the GT4RS also has them. Thus, the standard GT4 wheels seen on the pictures mule as only for testing purposes. The details that everyone wants to know are those of the engine. Rumor has it that it will retain the 4.0L Flat-6 seen in the GT4, which is based on the 992 block. Though this time, the power output will be in the upper 400 range, if not close to 500. Another rumor is going around that the car will use a de-tuned version of the GT3’s engine. At this moment we can only speculate, and wait until the official unveiling to finally find out the details on the engine.
The video below, recorded by Auto Addiction and posted on YouTube, shows the GT4RS mule going for a spin. Listen to the sounds of the engine and judge by yourself what you think this car is packing under the hood:
The Cayman GT4RS is likely to be unveiled by the end of this year. With everything getting pushed back due to COVID, it could mean that we may not see the final car until 2021. Until then, we can look forward to seeing the first GT4s and Spyders arriving at dealerships.
