Watch The 964 Turbo Deal The Nurburgring’s Turns

Ask a car enthusiast to name you some of the best racing tracks in the world, and undoubtedly they will bring up the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Nicknamed the “Green Hell”, this 20 kilometre, 154 turn track is among the most challenging in the world due to its staggering amount of blind corners and changes in elevation, requiring 100% attention from anyone tackling it. Enter at your own risk, they say; an accident on the track can prove costly, as insurance companies normally exclude on-track mishaps. While the venue plays host to several racing events each year, it is more widely known for its access to the public and its use as a testing ground by manufacturers and press. One of the most famous is Best Motoring, Japan’s hit monthly video series that focused on road tests and more famously its on-track battles.

The 964 Turbo 3.3, then-hot off the press, was tested by the Best Motoring team back in 1991. Rather than having Porsche send them a press car to test in the far east, the team opted to fly to Europe to test the new car. Of course when you are in Germany and are filming about cars, a trip to the Nurburgring must be part of the itinerary. Motoharu Kurozawa, popularly known as “Gan-san”, was the one given the honour of taking the car on its lap around The Ring. Though refined, the 964 Turbo 3.3 still possesses driving characteristic reminiscent of its predecessor the 930, so it is still a tricky car to master.

In this video, Gan-san manages to pull off perhaps one of the finest laps done around the track. Asides from his knowledge of the circuit, essential when going at it at full force, he keeps his calm when the car wants to do anything of its own. Just look at his steering inputs when the car wants to over steer out of a turn; all done with ease. If it was me who was behind the wheel my nerves would likely get the best of me.
